Soft morning mists sometimes cloak the Ribble in the morning, but Preston is a vibrant city full of vitality. Over 30,000 students are enrolled at the University of Central Lancashire, attracting young men and women from around the world to this centre of learning.

The skills they learn in Preston in so many fields of endeavour supply local high-tech employers such as British Aerospace and businesses from around the region with a dynamic workforce.

Lying exactly half way on the main line between London and Glasgow / Edinburgh, Preston Station provides extensive intercity connections to Manchester, Lancashire and Yorkshire, the Lake District and the Fylde coast. The city is similarly well served by the national motorway network.

With extensive Crown Courts in the city centre and barristers’ chambers located on Winckley Square, Preston is frequently at the core of many of England’s high profile and lengthy criminal court cases. Fortunately in this cosmopolitan city, it is rare for such cases to be brought to court for crimes committed within the city.

The Harris Museum & Art Gallery on the Market Square houses excellent permanent and visiting displays, together with the main City Library.
